Chapter 1: Understanding Mace & Pepper Spray

Mace and pepper spray are chemical irritants designed to incapacitate a person by overwhelming sensory organs and mucous membranes. They are not knock-out agents, sedatives, or toxins—they work by creating acute discomfort and temporary sensory impairment severe enough to break off an attack, give a user time to escape, or allow law enforcement to restrain a subject. Understanding what these tools actually do, and equally important, what they don't do, is essential for anyone responsible for deploying or evaluating them.

The term "mace and pepper spray" covers a category of chemical aerosols with distinct active ingredients and very different performance profiles. The two dominant formulations in modern use are oleoresin capsicum (OC), commonly called pepper spray, and 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS), commonly called tear gas or CS gas. A third older formulation, phenacyl chloride (CN), still appears in some legacy products and is sometimes called "chemical mace." Each of these compounds affects the human body through different mechanisms, with different onset times, different intensities, and different failure rates. A fourth category, hybrid formulations, combines two or more of these active ingredients to broaden effect and reduce the chance of total failure on a particular individual. Foam and gel variants alter the delivery mechanism without changing the underlying chemistry. The distinctions matter in practice because a product that works reliably indoors at temperature may fail outdoors in cold or wind, and a formulation that incapacitates one person may produce minimal effect on another—not because the tool
