Lumber and sheet stock are the skeletal frame of nearly every building and furniture piece made in North America. They are also materials that most professionals encounter without fully understanding what they are, how they are graded, or why one piece of lumber differs from another in ways that matter for a specific job. This chapter establishes what these materials actually are, how they are produced, and why the distinction between structural lumber and appearance lumber—and between solid wood and engineered panels—determines whether a material will work for your project or fail within months.
What Lumber and Sheet Stock Actually Are
Lumber is wood that has been sawn from a tree, dried, and milled to a standard dimension: a 2x4, a 1x12, a 4x4. The dimension refers to the nominal size (what the lumber is called), not the actual size. A 2x4 is called that even though it measures roughly 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches after milling and drying. This difference between nominal and actual size confuses new builders constantly and has cost money on every job where someone ordered materials by nominal size and discovered they did not fit as expected.
Sheet stock—plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), particleboard, and hardboard—is engineered panel material made by bonding wood fibers, veneers, or strands with adhesive under heat and pressure.
