Long johns are thermal base layers—fitted garments covering the torso, hips, and full legs—designed to trap body heat while managing moisture in cold or high-exertion environments. They are not luxury items or aspirational purchases. They are functional engineering, and their job is to keep you warm and dry under conditions where failure has real consequences: frostbite risk on a winter construction site, hypothermia exposure during backcountry work, or simple loss of productive hours because your crew is distracted by discomfort.

The term "long johns" is colloquial and covers a broad category: thermal underwear, base layers, long underwear, thermal tights. In commercial and industrial contexts, they are often simply called "long underwear" or specified by fiber type: "merino base layer," "synthetic long underwear," "wool long johns." Across contexts, the function is consistent. They sit against the skin, under your primary garments, and their performance determines whether the entire layering system works.

Your body produces heat continuously. At rest, a human generates roughly 100 watts of thermal energy—equivalent to a light bulb. During physical work or cold exposure, that production can increase to 400-500 watts. Long johns sit between your skin and the outside air, and their job is to trap as much of that heat as possible while allowing sweat to escape
