What Lifts and Hoists Are
A lift or hoist is a mechanical device designed to raise, lower, or suspend a load using mechanical advantage, manual effort, or powered actuation. At the simplest level, it trades effort or distance for force—allowing one person to raise a 1,000-pound engine block, or an electric motor to lift a 2-ton steel beam safely and repeatedly. The core principle is ancient (the lever, the pulley, the inclined plane), but the engineering, materials, and control systems around modern lifts and hoists are sophisticated, regulated, and critical to safe operation in hundreds of industries.
Lifts and hoists exist on a spectrum from hand-powered to fully automated. A lever hoist operated by one person with a chain and mechanical gearbox sits at one end; a permanent industrial bridge crane with variable-frequency drive motors and load cells sits at the other. In between are chain hoists driven by electric motors, hydraulic lifts, pneumatic hoists, and hybrid systems that combine human control with powered assistance. The choice of which you use depends on load weight, frequency of use, available infrastructure, environment, and regulatory requirements.
The distinction between a "lift" and a "hoist" is not always strict, and the terms are often used interchangeably in industry. Loosely, a lift typically raises or lowers a load vertically in place (a pallet jack, a scissor lift, a hydraulic table lift), while a hoist is often understood as a suspended mechanism that may also move the load horizontally
