Chapter 1: Understanding Lens Hoods
A lens hood is a tube of material—plastic, metal, or composite—that mounts to the front of a camera lens and extends outward from the lens barrel. Its fundamental purpose is to block light that would otherwise reach the lens surface at oblique angles and scatter internally, degrading image contrast and creating flare. This simple device, used by photographers and videographers for over a century, solves a specific optical problem. Understanding what that problem is, how the hood addresses it, and in which real-world situations it actually matters is essential to using one effectively.
What Lens Hoods Do: Flare, Contrast, and Light Control
All camera lenses are vulnerable to a phenomenon called flare. When light from a bright source—the sun, a studio light, a bright window—strikes the lens surface at an angle, a portion of that light scatters internally. Some of it reflects off the internal lens elements, creating visible artifacts in the image: halos, washed-out highlights, or lens-shaped ghosts. More critically, scattered light reduces overall image contrast by illuminating shadow areas that should be dark. The result is a flat, low-contrast image even in bright conditions.
A lens hood works by extending a barrier around the front of the lens barrel. This barrier blocks off-axis light—light coming from angles outside the lens's designed field of view—before it reaches the front element. By physically shadowing the lens surface, a hood prevents much of the scattered light from ever entering the optics. The result is higher
