Chapter 1: Understanding Lens & Filter Adapter Rings

An adapter ring is a precision-machined cylinder, usually made of aluminum, brass, or stainless steel, that repositions one optical element or accessory relative to another. In practice, the term covers two distinct families: lens mount adapters, which let you mount a lens on a camera body it was not designed for, and filter thread adapters, which step a filter's thread size up or down to fit a lens barrel. Both families do the same fundamental mechanical job: they hold two components at a precise distance from each other, with a precise rotational alignment, and they keep that relationship stable under the force of gravity, vibration, and temperature change. A good adapter is invisible in the final image. A bad one is the reason a $3,000 lens produces soft, lopsided photographs.

To understand what an adapter actually does, you have to start with the concept of flange distance. The flange distance, sometimes called the registration distance, is the distance from the mounting surface of the camera body to the film or sensor plane. Every lens mount standard specifies this dimension. On a Canon EF mount, it is 44.00 mm. On a Nikon F mount, it is 46.50 mm. On a Sony E mount, it is 18.00 mm.
