What an LED Light Bulb Is

A functional LED bulb includes that diode (or cluster of diodes), a power supply circuit that converts AC household current (or DC in some specialized applications) to the low-voltage DC current the diode needs, and a housing or base that lets the bulb fit into standard light fixtures.

The critical point: an LED bulb is not just the diode. It is a complete electromechanical assembly. This distinction matters because it explains why an LED bulb can fail even though the diode itself is still capable of producing light—the power supply circuit may have failed, or the connections may have corroded.
