Chapter 1: Understanding Lawn Vacuums
A lawn vacuum is a piece of outdoor power equipment designed to collect and move organic debris from turf and hard surfaces into a collection point. It uses a high-volume air stream created by an impeller, which is a fan specifically engineered to handle a high volume of leaves, grass clippings, pine needles, acorns, and small twigs without clogging. Unlike a standard leaf blower, which simply moves material, or a standard shop vacuum, which is not built for the high throughput of loose, bulky organic material, a lawn vacuum is designed for the specific task of bulk debris collection. It is a tool for reclaiming turf from a layer of litter that smothers grass, or for keeping hardscapes like driveways and patios clear of material that can create slip hazards and staining.
To understand how a lawn vacuum works, you need to look at the airflow path. Material is drawn in through a suction nozzle. On a tow-behind or walk-behind unit, this nozzle is often a wide, flat intake positioned just above the ground, sometimes with a separate flexible hose for reaching under shrubs or into flower beds. The air, and the debris entrained in it, then travels through a rigid hose or duct into the impeller housing. The impeller is the heart of the machine. It is a rotating disc with curved paddles or vanes that spins at high speed, creating both the suction at the intake and the pressure needed to push material
