Chapter 1: Understanding Lawn Mower Bags

The lawn mower bag is the final piece of a system designed to do one thing: remove grass clippings from a mowed area. To understand it, you have to understand that it is not a sack that is dragged behind a mower. It is an engineered component that operates under a specific set of conditions, and its primary function is not merely to hold grass, but to separate that grass from the air that is carrying it. Getting this separation right is the single most important factor in how well your mower performs, how clean your lawn looks, and how often you have to stop to empty the bag.

When you mow without a bag, the mower deck acts as a high-speed fan. The spinning blade cuts the grass and creates a significant volume of moving air, or airflow. This air is what lifts the grass blade before it is cut, and it is also what propels the cut clippings through the discharge chute. If you are not bagging, that air simply pushes the clippings out onto the lawn. When you attach a bag, you are creating a contained chamber for that airflow and the clippings to enter. The bag's job is to diffuse the velocity of that air so that the clippings fall to the bottom, allowing the air to escape. If the air cannot escape quickly enough, the airflow stalls, pressure builds up in the chute, and the bag will not fill.
