Chapter 1: Understanding Laptop Batteries

A laptop battery is a sealed rechargeable power pack, typically containing lithium-ion cells arranged in a specific configuration, that stores electrical energy chemically and releases it as direct current (DC) voltage to power your laptop when it's not plugged into wall power. That's the technical description. What matters more is understanding what it actually does, why it fails, and why the assumption that "the battery is dead" is often wrong.

Inside every modern laptop battery is a set of cylindrical or pouch-shaped cells made of lithium-ion chemistry. These cells are small—the most common cylindrical cell type is called an 18650, which is 18 millimeters in diameter and 65 millimeters long, roughly the size of a AA battery but heavier. A typical laptop might contain six, nine, or twelve of these cells wired together in specific patterns. Alternatively, modern thin laptops often use custom-shaped pouch cells—flat, rectangular packs that fit snugly into the laptop's chassis. Regardless of shape, the chemistry is almost always lithium-ion (Li-ion), sometimes lithium-polymer (LiPo), which is a variant. The chemistry matters because it determines the voltage the battery outputs, how much energy it stores for its weight, how many charge cycles it can survive, and how it fails when something goes wrong.
