Landscape fabric is a geotextile, which is a synthetic material designed to be buried or placed on the soil surface to modify soil behavior. In the context of a landscape, its function is to be a physical barrier against weeds while allowing water and air to pass through to the soil and plant roots below. That is the core function, but the simplification stops there. The reality is that landscape fabric is a category of engineering materials, and how well it performs depends on how its physical structure, its material composition, and the conditions of the installation site interact.
Consider a common scenario: a homeowner installs a new flower bed, lays down a black woven sheet, punches holes for some shrubs, and covers everything in two inches of shredded bark. In the first season, it looks immaculate. The weeds that used to poke through are gone, and the bed looks clean. Two years later, you might see the first signs that not all is well. A patch of grass has grown through a seam where the fabric was lapped too narrowly, or the bark mulch has decomposed into a fine, organic-rich compost.
