Chapter 1: Understanding Ladders & Scaffolding
Ladders and scaffolding are access systems. They exist to get people, tools, and materials to heights that cannot be reached from ground level safely or efficiently. That simple statement contains everything you need to understand about them: they solve a specific problem—reaching height—but they solve it under weight, often in variable conditions, sometimes in adverse weather, and frequently under time pressure. Understanding how they work, why they fail, and what separates a safe and efficient setup from a dangerous or wasteful one is the foundation for making every decision in this handbook.
Start with the simplest case: a single person standing on a ladder to paint a ceiling. The person weighs 180 pounds. The paint and tools add 30 pounds. That 210 pounds is a load—a downward force pressing on the ladder. The ladder itself weighs, say, 20 pounds. The total force on the ground where the ladder stands is approximately 230 pounds, plus a sideways force where the person leans to reach different parts of the ceiling. The ladder must do two things: (1) support that weight without breaking, bending, or slipping, and (2) distribute it safely to the ground over a stable base. If either fails, the person falls.
