Physical Construction and Materials
The vast majority of lacrosse balls are manufactured from solid vulcanized rubber, typically a blend of natural and synthetic rubber compounds. A regulation lacrosse ball has no hollow core, no air chamber, and no internal structure—it is solid throughout. This construction fundamentally distinguishes lacrosse balls from many other sports balls (basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls) which are inflated.
The rubber compound itself is engineered for specific performance characteristics. During manufacturing, the rubber is vulcanized—a chemical process that cross-links the polymer chains, creating the finished elasticity and hardness. The specific ratio of natural to synthetic rubber, the vulcanization formula, and the inclusion of additives (such as fillers and colorants) determine how the finished ball performs.
The outer surface of the ball is typically smooth rubber or occasionally textured slightly for improved grip, though regulation balls in competitive play must maintain a smooth finish.
