Chapter 1: Understanding Labels & Tags

A label is a printed or encoded piece of material—paper, plastic, synthetic fabric—attached to an object to convey information: a barcode for a package, a name tag on inventory equipment, a serial number on a product, a temperature indicator on a shipment. A tag is typically the same thing, though the term often applies to labels meant to be handled separately or repeatedly scanned (like warehouse bin labels or asset tags) rather than remaining on a product permanently. In practice, the terms are used interchangeably, and both serve the same function: storing and communicating information in a format a human or machine can read.

The simplicity of this description masks a critical reality: label performance in real operations depends almost entirely on three factors that have nothing to do with the information printed on them. Those factors are substrate material (what the label is printed on), adhesive (how it stays attached), and print method (how the information gets there). Get any one of these wrong for your environment, and the label fails not because the design is poor or the barcode is wrong, but because the physical label itself degrades, peels off, or becomes unreadable in the conditions where you need it most.
