A KVM cable is not a generic video cable with keyboards and mouse connectors wired in parallel. It is a multi-conductor assembly engineered to transmit three independent signal systems simultaneously—video, keyboard input, and mouse input—over a single, space-efficient cable run. Understanding what a KVM cable actually does, how it works at the signal level, and why it matters for your infrastructure is the foundation for every decision you make about selecting, installing, and maintaining one.

What a KVM Cable Actually Is

In its most concrete form, a KVM cable bundles together the conductors needed to carry keyboard signals, mouse signals, and video signals from one location to another. At one end sits your input devices—a keyboard and mouse—and your video display. At the other end sits the computer, server, or KVM switch you are controlling. Instead of running three separate cables (one for each device type), a KVM cable combines them into a single assembly.

The cable typically terminates in three connectors or connection points: a male VGA, DVI, or HDMI connector for video; a USB connector or PS/2 connector for keyboard; and a USB connector or PS/2 connector for mouse. Some designs integrate all three into a single multi-pin D-sub connector on one end (common in older KVM switches and industrial control systems), while others use three separate connectors fanned out like a bundle of pig tails.
