A kneeboard is a towed water sports board designed specifically for riding while balanced on both knees, rather than standing or lying prone. It is towed behind a boat at speeds typically ranging from 12 to 24 miles per hour, depending on the rider's skill level and the board's design. Unlike wakeboards—which are ridden while standing, with the rider's weight distributed across both feet and sustained by forward momentum and wake dynamics—kneeboards place the rider's center of gravity much lower and rely on a different set of mechanical and hydrodynamic principles. Understanding these differences is essential before choosing, using, or maintaining a kneeboard, because they directly affect how the board performs, how it should be set up, what maintenance it requires, and what skill progression looks like.
The basic mechanism is straightforward: a rope connects the kneeboard rider to the boat through either a direct tow rope or a specialized kneeboard handle. The boat moves forward, generating tension in the rope. That tension pulls the rider—and the kneeboard beneath them—across the water's surface. The rider controls their position, speed, direction, and how much tension they place on the rope through body position, weight distribution, and edge control. The board itself stays in contact with the water throughout the ride because of the rider's weight and the pressure exerted by the rope.
