What a Karaoke Chip Actually Is

A karaoke chip is a specialized integrated circuit designed for one purpose: to take a microphone signal, blend it with a music source, and add the effects that make a person's voice sound like a performance. You will find these chips in dedicated karaoke machines, in mixers used for karaoke nights at bars, in home theater receivers with a karaoke mode, and in the small consumer boxes that plug between a microphone and a television. They range from a single 8-pin package that handles only an echo effect to a complex system-on-chip that processes microphone audio, decodes song data, and generates on-screen lyrics.

To understand what these chips do, it helps to walk through a real signal path. In a typical low-priced home karaoke machine, the user plugs a wired microphone into a 6.3 mm jack. The microphone signal - an analog voltage level of a few millivolts - enters the chip's preamp stage, which is often integrated on the same die. The chip amplifies that weak signal to a usable level. At the same time, a music track plays from a USB drive, an SD card, or an auxiliary line input. That music signal enters the chip through a second input. Inside the chip, the microphone signal gets delays applied to create an echo or reverb effect, then both signals are mixed together and sent to an output stage that drives a line-level output or a small internal
