A jock strap is a piece of supportive underwear designed to hold a protective cup against the male pelvic region, or in its modern forms, to provide compression and support for the testes and surrounding tissue during physical activity. At its most basic level, it consists of a waistband, two elastic straps that pass between the legs and attach to the waistband, and a pouch that holds the genitals. This fundamental design is distinct from standard athletic briefs, which are cupless, and compression shorts, which offer muscular support but not the discrete, high-hold functionality that a jock strap provides.
Understanding how the garment works requires appreciating its physical mechanics. The system is built on tension and fixation. The waistband, usually two to three inches wide, is constructed from a heavy elastic webbing that grips the hips. This band serves as the anchor for the entire system.
