An ironing board pad and cover is the working interface between a hot metal appliance and the garments you are pressing. It consists of two distinct and separable components that function as a single system. The pad is a thick, resilient layer of cushioning material that sits directly on the board's perforated metal surface. The cover is a taut outer layer of fabric that fits over the pad, wraps around the board's edges, and is secured underneath. Together, they serve three concrete functions: they provide a compliant surface that allows the fabric of a garment to be pressed evenly without seam impressions, they protect the garment from direct contact with the metal board which would otherwise scorch or create unwanted shine, and they allow steam and heat to pass through in a controlled manner rather than reflecting off a hard surface.
To understand why the pad and cover matter, begin with what happens without them. An uncovered metal ironing board is essentially a perforated steel or aluminum table. If you press a cotton shirt directly on that bare metal, the heat is distributed unevenly. The shirt fabric makes full contact only at the high points of the perforation pattern and at the seams.
