An I/O card or adapter is a piece of hardware that extends a computer's ability to communicate with external devices, storage, networks, and specialized equipment. It sits between the computer's internal buses and connectors on one side, and external ports or specialized interfaces on the other. When you plug a storage controller card into a PCIe slot, add a USB hub to your system, install a network adapter in an expansion bay, or connect a USB-C to Thunderbolt adapter to a laptop, you are deploying an I/O card or adapter. This chapter explains what these components actually do, how they work, and why getting them right matters in real environments.

What an I/O Card Actually Does

At its core, an I/O card or adapter is a protocol translator and signal conditioner. A computer's motherboard has a limited number of built-in ports and buses. A typical server motherboard might have two or four SATA ports, a single or dual-port network interface, and a set of USB headers for internal connections. A desktop workstation might have a few USB ports on the rear panel, an Ethernet jack, and maybe an audio connector. These built-in connections are often insufficient for the actual work the system needs to do. A data center server might need to connect to eight or sixteen drives.
