But the term encompasses concrete masonry blocks designed for load-bearing walls, composite blocks for outdoor landscaping, wooden or recycled-plastic blocks used in educational settings and temporary installations, and specialized modular systems used in commercial and industrial contexts. All share the same core principle: they lock together mechanically rather than being bonded or fastened.

How the locking mechanisms work

The mechanical connection between blocks is the defining feature of the category. Different block designs use different locking systems, and understanding how these systems work helps explain why some blocks perform well under specific conditions and fail under others.
