Chapter 1: Understanding Insulation
Insulation is a material or assembly that slows the movement of heat. That is its only job. It does not generate heat, does not cool, does not condition air, and does not filter anything. It simply makes it harder for thermal energy to move from one side of a surface to the other. But that simple job—done correctly—is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce building energy consumption, improve comfort, and extend the life of building systems.
To understand why insulation matters, you need to understand how heat moves. Heat flows in three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is direct heat transfer through a solid material—think of touching a hot pan and feeling the heat travel through the metal to your hand. Convection is heat transfer through movement of air or liquid: warm air rises, cool air sinks, and that circulation carries heat with it. Radiation is heat transferred in the form of electromagnetic waves—the way the sun heats your skin, or a heat lamp warms a room without heating the air around it directly.
In a building, all three happen constantly. In winter, warm interior air loses heat to the cold exterior through the walls, roof, and foundation. The heat conducts through materials, convects within wall cavities and air gaps, and radiates across empty spaces. Without insulation, that heat loss is rapid and expensive.
