Indoor climbing holds are bolted or glued architectural elements that provide grip points for climbers on climbing walls. Unlike casual gym equipment, holds are load-bearing installations that must withstand repeated impact, sustained tension, and high-volume daily use while maintaining consistent performance and safety. A single climbing gym wall can host dozens of holds sustaining forces from 50 to 200+ pounds per bolt (or adhesive joint) across thousands of climber sessions per month. The holds must perform this service reliably, predictably, and without degradation that could cause injury or require constant replacement.
To understand what makes a hold work or fail, you need to recognize what happens to it in real conditions. A climber grabs a jug (a large, bucket-shaped hold) on a vertical wall. Their hand and bodyweight create a downward force on that single point of contact. That force transfers through the hold's body to its anchor—either a bolt that threads into a threaded insert embedded in the wall substrate, or an adhesive bond between the hold and the wall surface. The substrate itself (plywood, concrete, wooden planks, or composite panels) must be stiff enough not to flex dangerously and strong enough not to degrade where the anchor sits. Over time, thousands of hands grip that hold, applying force at slightly different angles. The hold's surface texture compresses and polishes under repeated contact.
