What an impact wrench or driver is, fundamentally, is a power tool that delivers rotational force through rapid, repeated mechanical impacts rather than continuous steady torque. A conventional electric drill or corded wrench applies rotational force continuously—you turn the motor on, it rotates the chuck, and the fastener or work piece turns at a steady rate. An impact tool works differently. Its motor drives an internal mechanism that delivers short, violent rotational pulses—sometimes hundreds per minute—instead of constant rotation. Each impact is a discrete mechanical event: the internal hammer strikes an anvil, the anvil rotates the socket or bit one notch, and then the hammer resets and strikes again.
Why this matters in practice: impact force transfers energy into a fastener in bursts, which is fundamentally more effective at breaking loose corrosion and rust than steady pulling force. A mechanic removing a rusted lug nut from a car wheel will get better results with a 1/2-inch impact wrench in 30 seconds than with a corded drill in two minutes—or not at all if the fastener is severely seized. Continuous torque, no matter how high, simply loads and stresses the fastener and the tool. Impact force, applied dynamically, breaks through the corrosion layer and allows the fastener to turn. This is not a matter of raw power—it is a matter of mechanism.
