Chapter 1: Understanding Hunting & Survival Knives
A hunting or survival knife is fundamentally a tool: a piece of hardened steel attached to a handle, designed to cut. Unlike a chef's knife, which works primarily on soft materials at room temperature, a hunting or survival knife must perform across a wide range of conditions—wet hides and bone at varying temperatures, wood and rope, sometimes in extreme cold or humid salt air. Its design, materials, and maintenance requirements follow directly from these demands.
To understand why a particular knife design exists or fails, you need to know what happens to steel under stress. Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, often combined with other elements like chromium, molybdenum, or vanadium. When you harden steel by heating and cooling it (a process called quenching and tempering), you create a crystalline structure that can hold an edge: the harder the steel, the longer that edge lasts before becoming dull. But there is a fundamental tradeoff. Harder steel is more brittle—more likely to chip or crack under impact or lateral stress. Softer steel is more flexible and less likely to break, but it dulls faster. A hunting knife blade typically sits around 55-62 HRC (Rockwell hardness), a middle ground between durability and edge retention. A kitchen knife might be 56-58 HRC; a pry bar might be 40-45 HRC.
