Home and garden encompasses all the physical systems, materials, and structures that support residential living and plant cultivation on a property. Unlike interior home systems that are often hidden behind walls and ceilings, home and garden systems operate in open environments exposed to weather, temperature extremes, water, soil chemistry, and biological activity. A foundation must manage water infiltration and differential settlement. Drainage must move water away from structures and plant roots at a predictable rate. Hardscape materials must resist freeze-thaw cycles, UV degradation, and load stresses. Plants must have appropriate soil composition, pH, and moisture to establish roots and grow. Every element depends on properties that are measurable and predictable, not on subjective preference.
