Hockey protective gear is engineered equipment. Each piece—the helmet, shoulder pads, gloves, shin guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and girdle—is designed to manage impact forces and reduce injury risk in specific, measurable ways. Understanding what protective gear actually is, how it functions during play, and why those functions matter is the foundation for making informed decisions about equipment, whether you are selecting gear for yourself, managing it for a team, or evaluating it as a business.

At its core, protective gear works by doing one or both of two things: it either absorbs impact energy (converting the force of a collision into heat and deformation of the protective material) or deflects impact away from vulnerable body parts. A hockey helmet absorbs energy through foam liners that compress on impact, spreading the force over a wider area and a longer time period so that the force reaching your skull is reduced. Shoulder pads work differently—they deflect impacts by using hard plastic shells on top of foam padding, so a stick strike or body check is redirected away from the collarbone and shoulder joint rather than being absorbed directly. Most protective gear uses both mechanisms: a hard outer shell deflects, and foam underneath absorbs. The balance between deflection and absorption varies by piece and by design.
