At the most fundamental level, a hockey fan accessory is a manufactured good produced under a licensing agreement. The National Hockey League (NHL) and other professional leagues grant specific companies the rights to produce merchandise bearing team logos and trademarks. This licensing system determines much of the category's structure. In North America, the NHL has an exclusive licensing agreement with a major apparel manufacturer for on-ice jerseys, but the market for fan accessories is far more fragmented.
