Chapter 1: Understanding Herbicides
A herbicide is a chemical substance designed to kill unwanted plants or inhibit their growth. That definition is accurate but reveals almost nothing about how herbicides actually work, why some work on certain plants and fail on others, or what you need to know to use one responsibly. Understanding herbicides requires stepping past the product name on the label and examining the mechanism of action—how the chemical achieves the biological result of plant death or stunting.
When a plant dies, something specific has failed. Photosynthesis has stopped. Root uptake has ceased. Growth has frozen. Cell division has halted. Different herbicides kill plants in different ways, and that difference is not incidental—it determines which weeds the product will control, when in the growing season it will be effective, what weather conditions it needs, and how long it persists in the soil. A landscape manager who understands this mechanism can diagnose why an application failed, predict whether a product will work on a new weed species, and make a defensible choice between competing products and prices.
How Herbicides Enter Plants
Before any herbicide can work, it must reach the site inside the plant where it causes damage. There are two primary pathways: foliar (through leaves) and root (through soil into roots).
