Chapter 1: Understanding Heat-Shrink Tubing

Heat-shrink tubing is a thermoplastic sleeve that contracts in diameter when heated. It is used to insulate electrical connections, provide mechanical strain relief, seal out moisture and chemicals, and bundle wires or cables. You have seen it on the end of a car battery cable, inside a computer power supply, and on the wiring harness of a household appliance. Its ability to form a tight, protective layer over an irregular shape makes it a cornerstone of modern electrical and mechanical assembly.

To understand what it is, you first need to understand the process that gives it its name. The tubing starts as a standard extruded polymer tube. After extrusion, the tube is cross-linked and expanded to a larger diameter. Cross-linking is a chemical process that joins adjacent polymer chains, creating a three-dimensional network. Once cross-linked, the material has a "memory" of its original extruded shape. The tube is then heated and expanded to the larger diameter you see when you buy it. When you later apply enough heat, the polymer chains relax and the material shrinks back toward that original, smaller dimension. The key is that it shrinks radially, so the diameter decreases while the length stays mostly the same, typically changing by only 5 percent or less.
