Chapter 1: Understanding Heat Guns

A heat gun is a handheld electrothermal tool that forces heated air at controlled velocity through a nozzle. That is the technical definition. What it actually does is far more nuanced and consequential than that sentence suggests.

In practice, a heat gun converts electrical energy into radiant and convective heat, then directs that heat with some precision toward a target material or assembly. A contractor uses it to shrink vinyl around window frames. A repair technician uses it to loosen adhesive on a phone screen. A model builder uses it to bend plastic without cracking it. A manufacturing facility uses it to cure epoxy in a controlled environment. A welder uses it to preheat steel before welding in cold conditions. None of these jobs requires the same tool, or the same understanding of how to use one.

Understanding a heat gun begins with understanding what you are actually controlling and what you are trying to accomplish. That requires clarity on three interrelated concepts: temperature, airflow, and energy delivery. These three variables interact in ways that separate competent use from amateur guesswork and that determine whether you damage your material or achieve your intended result.

Temperature, Airflow, and Energy Delivery

Temperature is the most obvious specification a heat gun advertises. A typical industrial heat gun ranges from 50°C to 630°C (120°F to 1200°F). A consumer model might max out at 500°C (930°F). But temperature alone tells you almost nothing about what the tool will actually do
