The headphone amplifier is the most straightforward, and yet most misunderstood, component in the audio chain. At its most basic, it does exactly what its name suggests: it takes a low-level audio signal and increases its voltage and current to a level sufficient to drive a pair of headphones. However, the practical implications of that simple task are enormous. A headphone amplifier is not merely a "volume knob"; its design, power capabilities, and electrical characteristics directly dictate what you hear, determining whether a headphone performs to its stated potential or falls short of it, sounding thin, lifeless, or distorted.
To understand the function of a headphone amplifier, one must first appreciate its role in the larger signal chain.
