A headboard is a vertical structure mounted or attached to the wall behind a bed's head end. A footboard is the same structure at the foot of the bed. Together, they frame the bed within the room and connect the sleeping surface to the wall or floor. They are not decorative trim. They are structural, acoustic, and spatial elements that solve real problems in bedroom design and furniture assembly.

Most people think of a headboard as a cushioned panel upholstered in fabric. That is one type. But headboards can also be a sheet of plywood, a metal frame, a wall-mounted shelving unit, an integrated part of the bed platform itself, or a combination of materials. A footboard can be equally varied. What they share is function: they anchor the bed visually and sometimes physically, manage the space above and around the sleeping surface, and address practical problems that arise when a bed sits against a wall or stands in the center of a room.

To understand why headboards and footboards matter, consider what happens without them. A bed placed directly against a wall with no headboard or back panel will show every impression, dust mark, and damage to the wall surface behind it.
