A hazardous material suit is a complete protective system designed to isolate the wearer from specific chemical, biological, radiological, or particulate hazards. It is not a single garment or a simple coating — it is an engineered assembly of fabric, sealing systems, closures, and breathing apparatus compatibility built to prevent contact between a specific hazard and skin, respiratory system, and clothing underneath. The suit's protection comes from three integrated components: the fabric barrier itself, the closure and sealing systems that prevent leakage at joints and openings, and the compatibility of the suit with the breathing apparatus (respirator or supplied air) the wearer is using.

Understanding how a hazmat suit actually protects requires a shift away from marketing language and toward the physical principles underlying the system. The primary barrier is the fabric itself, which provides protection by one or more of four mechanisms: impermeability (the suit material is so densely woven that liquid or vapor cannot pass through it), permeability with absorption (the material absorbs the hazardous substance and breaks it down chemically before it can reach the wearer), low vapor transmission (the material slows the rate at which vapors penetrate, extending the time before breakthrough occurs), and particulate filtration (the material traps solid particles and aerosols at the surface). Different fabrics use different mechanisms, and a suit that excels at one mechanism may fail at another. A fabric rated for excellent protection against liquid chemical splash may offer poor protection against prolonged vapor
