Handheld and PDA software is not a single product. It is a collection of specialized applications, synchronization engines, security layers, and device-specific services that work together to extend enterprise and personal productivity onto mobile devices—phones, tablets, and purpose-built handhelds—so that work can happen offline, in the field, and outside the office. To understand it, you must separate it from two things it is commonly confused with: general-purpose mobile apps and the operating system that runs on the device itself.
A general-purpose mobile app—like a weather application, a map service, or a social media client—is designed for consumer use on a smartphone or tablet. It assumes a network connection exists most of the time. It stores data in cloud services. It prioritizes ease of use and visual design. Handheld and PDA software works differently. It is purpose-built for specific professional workflows. It must work reliably when network connectivity is intermittent or nonexistent. It stores data locally on the device and synchronizes it with servers or desktop systems when a connection becomes available. It prioritizes data accuracy, offline functionality, and integration with existing business systems. A field technician using handheld software to record service work orders, a nurse using a PDA to access patient records, or a delivery driver using a specialized application to scan packages and capture signatures—these are working with handheld and PDA software, not a typical app.
The operating system (iOS, Android, Windows, or a proprietary real-time OS) is the foundation on
