Chapter 1: Understanding Hand Sanitizers & Wipes
Hand sanitizers and wipes are not interchangeable replacements for soap and water, and they are not all functionally equivalent to each other. They are topical antimicrobial products designed to reduce the number of microorganisms on skin or surfaces in a rapid, targeted way. Understanding what these products actually do—and equally important, what they don't do—is the foundation for choosing them correctly, using them effectively, and building any business around them.
What Hand Sanitizers Actually Do
A hand sanitizer is a liquid, foam, or gel formulation containing one or more active antimicrobial ingredients that kills or inactivates bacteria, viruses, and fungi on the skin. The operative word here is reduces—hand sanitizers do not sterilize. They work by disrupting the cell membranes or proteins of microorganisms, causing them to lose function and die. This process typically happens very quickly when the product makes direct contact with the target organism, but it is not instantaneous and requires what is called contact time.
Contact time is the amount of time the sanitizer must remain wet on the skin before it has done its work. For most alcohol-based hand sanitizers, this is typically 20 to 30 seconds. During this window, the active ingredient is actively killing microorganisms. Once the product dries, the chemical reaction stops. This is a critical detail that most users ignore, applying sanitizer and then immediately touching something else or wiping their hands dry within 5 seconds. The product may smell like it
