Chapter 1: Understanding Hammer Handles
The hammer is one of the oldest tools in human history, and for most of that history, the handle was the part that broke. You can still find stone heads and rusted iron heads at archaeological sites and in antique shops, but the wood that was attached to them is long gone. That is the fundamental reality of the hammer handle: it is a sacrificial component. It is designed to be replaced, but it is also the only thing standing between your hand and thousands of impacts.
To understand what a hammer handle actually is, you need to understand the forces it experiences in normal use. When you swing a hammer, you are accelerating a heavy steel head from rest to a high velocity. At the moment of impact, that head is stopped almost instantly, sometimes in less than a millisecond. All of the kinetic energy has to go somewhere. Most of it goes into the work piece, which is the point. But a significant fraction of it transfers back into the handle as a shock wave. The head is moving in one direction, and the impact stops it, so the handle, which has mass and flexibility, wants to keep moving. It compresses slightly, then rebounds. That compression and rebound happens up to several times per second during a day of framing, and it is what causes wood handles to fatigue, crack, and eventually fail.
