Chapter 1: Understanding Hair Permanents & Straighteners

Hair permanents and straighteners are chemical preparations designed to alter the cross-linked structure of the hair protein, keratin, to change its natural shape. A perm restructures the hair to create curl or wave; a straightener, or relaxer, restructures it to remove curl or wave. Both product categories achieve their effect through the same fundamental chemical mechanism: the breaking and subsequent re-forming of disulfide bonds, which are the strongest structural bonds in the hair fiber. Understanding this mechanism at a chemical level is not merely academic—it is the difference between a predictable, reproducible service and one that results in damage, breakage, or an unhappy client.

The hair fiber is composed of approximately 85-90% protein, principally keratin. The keratin molecules in the cortex, the middle layer of the hair, are arranged in long coiled chains called alpha-helices. These chains are held together longitudinally by strong chemical bonds. The most important of these for permanent restructuring are disulfide bonds, which form between two sulfur atoms located on adjacent amino acid chains. These bonds are incredibly strong; they are the reason hair retains its shape under wet, dry, and hot conditions. To permanently reshape hair, you must break these bonds, mold the wet hair into a new shape, and then re-form them to hold that new shape.
