Hair color removers are a specific category of chemical agents designed to reverse or reduce the effect of artificial hair dye. Unlike shampoos that merely strip surface oil, or bleach that lightens the natural melanin in the hair shaft, a color remover targets the artificial dye molecules that have been deposited into the cortex. The intent is to effect a change without causing catastrophic damage. It is a reductive process, or sometimes an oxidative one, but it is not the same as a lightener. A lightener oxidizes and destroys natural pigment. A color remover seeks to shrink or break down synthetic dye molecules, making them small enough to be washed out of the hair.
The most common type of color remover on the market is a reducing agent. The active ingredient is typically a compound like sodium hydrosulfite or a sulfoxylate derivative. The chemistry is straightforward: these chemicals donate electrons to the large, complex synthetic dye molecules. The dye molecules are structured to be large and stable. That is what makes them color-fast. When they are reduced, the molecule's structure is altered. It changes from a long, conjugated chain of alternating single and double bonds that absorbs visible light to a state where that chain is broken or altered.
