Gun care and accessories are not optional. They are the direct determinant of whether a firearm remains reliable, safe, and accurate throughout its life, or deteriorates into an unsafe or non-functional object. Understanding what gun care products actually do—and what happens when they are neglected or chosen poorly—is essential for anyone responsible for a firearm's performance and longevity.

At the most basic level, gun care serves three functions. First, it removes fouling—the burned powder residue, primer residue, bullet material, and other combustion byproducts that accumulate inside the barrel, chamber, bolt, and firing pin during shooting. This fouling is corrosive and abrasive; left in place, it attacks the steel surface, blocks critical clearances, and gradually damages the precision fit between parts. Second, gun care protects exposed steel surfaces from rust and corrosion caused by humidity, sweat, temperature cycling, and environmental contamination. Third, it maintains the lubrication between moving parts—the bolt carrier group, trigger mechanism, safety lever, and magazine spring—so they function smoothly and predictably.

Each of these three functions requires different products. A solvent dissolves and suspends fouling so it can be wiped away. A brush mechanically scrubs stubborn carbon and lead deposits from inside the barrel. A patch absorbs solvents and displaced fouling and polishes the steel surface. A lubricant—whether oil, grease, or synthetic compound—reduces friction, resists moisture, and maintains the precision fit of moving parts.
