The Workhorse of Liquid Measurement
A graduated cylinder is a tall, narrow, cylindrical container with graduated markings on its side, designed for measuring a specific volume of liquid. It is one of the most common and fundamental pieces of laboratory equipment, found in nearly every setting where liquids are measured, mixed, or transferred. Its simple construction belies the precision it can offer when used correctly, making it an indispensable tool for chemists, biologists, medical technicians, food scientists, and even hobbyist brewers and aquarists.
The principle of operation is elegantly straightforward. You fill the cylinder with a liquid, and the bottom of the curved surface of the liquid—the meniscus—aligns with one of the etched or printed lines on the cylinder's wall. The number associated with that line indicates the volume of liquid in the cylinder. This direct, visual measurement of volume is what makes the graduated cylinder so valuable. Unlike a beaker or a flask, which are designed for mixing and containing liquids, the graduated cylinder is optimized for accurately measuring a volume of liquid before it is used in another process.
The accuracy of this measurement is not a fixed quality but a property determined by the cylinder's design, its manufacturing tolerance, and, crucially, the technique of the person using it. A standard 100 mL beaker might have a tolerance of +/- 5% or more, meaning a measurement of 50 mL in it could actually be anywhere from 47.5 to 52.5 mL. A well-made 100
