Chapter 1: Understanding Glue Guns
A glue gun is a controlled melting and dispensing device for thermoplastic adhesives. It does not "glue" things in the way a bottle of white craft glue does. It takes a solid, polymer-based stick or bead, heats it to a specific temperature at which it becomes a viscous liquid, and forces that liquid through a nozzle onto a substrate, where it cools and solidifies to form a bond. The entire process happens in seconds. There is no solvent to evaporate, no water to dry, and no curing reaction. The bond's strength comes from the physical and chemical interaction that occurs as the hot, wet adhesive flows into the surface texture of the material and then locks into place as it solidifies.
Understanding this basic mechanism is the first step to using any glue gun effectively. Every design decision, from the wattage of the heating element to the shape of the nozzle, exists to control this one physical process: melt the adhesive to a precise viscosity, deposit it in the right place, and let it cool under controlled conditions. When a bond fails, it is usually because one of these three control points was wrong. The adhesive was not hot enough to flow. It was deposited in the wrong location. Or its cooling was interrupted, preventing a proper crystalline structure from forming.
