Chapter 1: Understanding Glass
Glass is neither as simple nor as inert as it appears. To most people, glass is a transparent material that fills a window—present and invisible until it breaks. In construction and manufacturing, glass is far more specific. It is a brittle, amorphous solid made from silica and additives, engineered to perform under specific loads, temperature changes, and environmental stresses. Understanding what glass is at the material level—how it is made, why it behaves the way it does, and where it fails—is the foundation for choosing the right type, installing it correctly, and diagnosing problems when they occur.
How Glass Is Made
Glass is manufactured by heating sand (silicon dioxide, or SiO2) to approximately 1700°C and melting it together with additives such as soda ash and limestone. At this temperature, the silica becomes a viscous liquid. As it cools, it does not crystallize the way most materials do—it remains amorphous, meaning its atoms are arranged randomly rather than in a repeating lattice. This amorphous structure is what makes glass transparent and is also why it behaves so differently from crystalline materials like steel or wood.
The additives in glass serve specific purposes. Soda ash (sodium oxide) lowers the melting point, making the glass easier and cheaper to produce. Limestone (calcium oxide) improves durability and chemical resistance. Other elements—iron oxide, cobalt, chromium—are added to tint glass or change its optical properties.
