A glass cleaner is not a single thing. It is a mixture of water, a solvent or alkaline salt, a surfactant, and often a handful of other additives, each with a specific job. When you spray a cleaner on a window or countertop, you are not just "washing" it. You are performing a chemical operation: you are reducing the adhesion forces that hold a contaminant to a surface, lifting that contaminant into a liquid phase, and then carrying it away before it can redeposit. Understanding this basic mechanism is the difference between buying a product based on advertising and selecting a tool based on its engineering.

Consider the most common scenario: a plate-glass window in a storefront. The glass is not perfectly flat at the molecular level, nor is it completely inert. It has a surface energy that attracts polar molecules. Dirt in an urban environment is complex. It contains mineral dust, carbon particles from exhaust, waxy film from tree sap or road grime, and occasionally hard water salts that are left behind when rain evaporates. Water alone cannot remove all of this. The mineral dust and salts might dissolve or rinse away, but the waxy hydrocarbons are hydrophobic and will just bead up.
