A gate is not a door. A door hangs on hinges and swings within a frame on a building's threshold. A gate must span an opening—often much wider than a doorway—and function reliably over years of exposure to weather, traffic, soil movement, and use that can be far more demanding than any interior door experiences. Whether hung on massive hinges set into posts, sliding along a track anchored to the ground, or suspended from an overhead structure, a gate is a system: it integrates load-bearing members, fasteners, materials chosen for specific environmental conditions, and installation geometry that must resist frost heave, settle, wind, impact, and the mechanical stress of repeated opening and closing.

Understanding a gate begins with understanding what it must do. In the most basic terms, a gate controls access: it allows authorized passage and denies it to others. But "denying passage" means the gate must bear load—the weight of its own structure, the force applied by wind, and potentially the impact or pushing force of vehicles or animals. A five-foot residential swing gate might weigh 200 pounds; the posts that support it, set three or four feet into the ground, must anchor that weight and distribute the stress of repeated opening and closing across stable soil.
