A gas mask or respirator is a device worn on the face that prevents harmful substances from entering your airways. That statement is accurate but useless on its own. The real question professionals and users face is: which of the many different devices will actually protect me against the specific hazard I'm exposed to, and how do I know if it's working?
To answer that, you need to understand what these devices are designed to do at a mechanical level, why different designs exist, and what they fundamentally cannot do. Unlike other personal protective equipment—gloves, aprons, eye protection—a respirator or mask directly controls what you breathe. Failure is not a rash or a bruise. All gas masks and respirators perform the same essential task: they either filter air before you breathe it, or they supply you with air from a clean source. That is the entire category.
