A gas detector is an instrument that continuously monitors the concentration of specific gases in air and signals an alarm when that concentration exceeds a threshold considered hazardous. The simplest detectors are portable, battery-powered devices that one person carries into a space—a technician checking a confined space before entry, a firefighter assessing a building after a chemical spill, a facility worker testing a utility vault. The most complex are networked systems with dozens of sensors feeding data to a central alarm panel and remote dashboard, typical in chemical plants, refineries, and waste treatment facilities where continuous monitoring is either required by regulation or essential to operations.

Why this matters: gases themselves are invisible and often odorless. Hydrogen sulfide, which kills fast at high concentrations, smells like rotten eggs at low concentrations but causes olfactory fatigue—your sense of smell literally stops working after a few minutes of exposure. Carbon monoxide, produced by incomplete combustion in confined spaces and industrial processes, has no smell, color, or taste. Chlorine gas, released during chemical accidents or industrial upsets, is heavier than air and pools near the ground where workers cannot see it.
