Defining the Garment Shield: A Functional Primer

A garment shield is a barrier material placed between the wearer's underarm and the garment's fabric. Its primary function is to absorb or repel perspiration and prevent antiperspirants and deodorants from contacting and degrading the garment. This is a deceptively simple definition for a device that requires careful engineering to function correctly across a range of fabrics, climates, and activity levels.

The shield itself is distinct from other garment protectors, such as shoulder pads or sweat pads used on furniture. Shoulder pads are for structure, not moisture management. A garment shield is a dedicated, often removable or sew-in component designed specifically to address the chemical and physical stresses of the axillary (underarm) region. It is a preventative maintenance tool, not a cosmetic addition.

To understand what a shield does, you must first understand exactly what it is fighting. The enemy is a combination of moisture and chemistry. Human perspiration is roughly 99% water, with the remainder being dissolved salts, urea, and lactic acid. When this evaporates, the salts and acids remain on the fabric. Over time, these residues can weaken cellulose fibers like cotton, causing them to become brittle and tear. On protein-based fibers like wool and silk, the enzymes in sweat can cause more direct degradation, including color change and breakdown of the fiber structure.
