A garage door keypad or remote is a purpose-built radio transmitter, a component in a closed security system. At its core, the system is simple: a transmitter (the remote or keypad) sends a signal over a specific radio frequency to a receiver integrated into the garage door opener. When the receiver validates that signal, it activates a relay switch that powers the door motor, either opening or closing the door. This basic chain of events, however, relies on a surprising amount of engineering. The radio frequency must be precise, the data encoding must be secure, and the power system must operate in environments ranging from a freezing driveway in January to a sun-baked porch in July.
