A futon pad is a textile-based mattress layer, typically 3 to 8 inches thick, composed of densified fibers or layered materials that provide a sleeping surface for a futon frame. It is not a traditional innerspring mattress, nor is it a simple fabric covering. A futon pad is an engineered product: its comfort, durability, and performance depend on the composition of its core material, the density at which that material is compressed, the weight and construction of its cover fabric, and how well those elements are assembled and maintained over time.

To understand what a futon pad is, you must first understand the distinction between a futon pad and a futon frame. A futon frame is a wooden or metal structure that folds or reclines, converting between a couch position and a bed position. The frame's role is structural and mechanical. The futon pad is the textile component that sits on top of the frame and provides the actual sleeping surface.
